    • How can I get rid of ivy?

We've got tons of ivy creeping up our mature trees in the garden.

I plan to get rid of it but I heard that you can leave it on the tree as long as you pull up the roots and leave a 6 foot gap from the ground.

Has anyone else heard about this? Does it work? Don't want to go to all the trouble of getting rid of it if it doesn't work properly and just grows back!

hi cat, im under the assumption that your meant to remove the ivy, if it gets round plants it, as to say, strangles them. i imagine it would do the same to a tree.

Ivy  is a difficult plant  to get  rid of, the only way is to destroy it  completely. I once began growing

ivy to hide an unsightly wall, but  it  grew  everywhere, the  people  next  door  complainted,  and

I     had  to  tear it  down and  put  bleach  on  the  roots. It  broke  my  heart.

If you put anything down to kill the ivy you might also kill the tree , think the only thing you can do is keep the ivy trimmed to size which will be a job as it grows like wildfire

If your tree is healthy, the ivy will not kill it. If the tree looks as if it is dying then it is probably sick anyway. Ivy is great for nesting birds and they will eat the berries too, but if you want to get rid of it, then I would try cutting away the runners. Don't use poison as it could affect the tree.
